Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Deadline to Apply?

All materials must be received by the last Friday in March. Scholarship applications and attachments may be turned in to the SHS Guidance Office or the Sturgis Area Community Foundation office by that date.

What can Scholarship Awards be used for?

They are used to assist with college expenses, which include tuition, fees, on-campus room/board and required materials. Unfortunately, scholarship money may not be used for expenses such as child care or transportation, although these expenses will be taken into
consideration upon awarding scholarships that are based on financial need.

May I Receive Awards from More than One Scholarship?

Yes. You will complete only 1 application (and attachments). Your application will be distributed and considered for each scholarship for which you are eligible. Therefore, you could be selected as a recipient of multiple awards.

Does the Sturgis Area Community Foundation Make the Decisions about who is selected?

No. Each scholarship fund has its own selection committee. The Sturgis Area Community Foundation processes the application materials for the committees that make the award selections. All applications are numbered and reviewed on an anonymous basis.

Who Receives the Scholarship Check?

Scholarship checks are sent directly to the academic institution the scholarship recipient will be attending. Checks are normally sent between August 1 and August 10th, although it may take the academic institution awhile to credit the award to the student’s account.
The student’s ID number assigned by the college or university is on the check to ensure the money is credited to the proper account.

If I Receive a Scholarship One Year, will I Automatically Receive an Award for the Following Year?

No. Currently there are a limited number of renewable scholarships. In all renewal cases, students must complete a new scholarship application (same form is used), including all required materials, in order to be considered. The application and all required materials are
due the last Friday in March to the Foundation office.

Attention: Renewing a scholarship is the responsibility of the recipient. Failure to complete and return a scholarship application and required materials to the Foundation by the last Friday in March will void the application: it will not be considered!

The Sturgis Area Community Foundation is not responsible for applications that are delayed for any reason, or lost in the mail. The completed application and required attachments must be received by the due date in order to be considered.
