Sturgis Area Community Foundation Funds award $125,000 in grants for Giving Tuesday


Giving Tuesday, celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a global movement that unleashes the power of generosity in communities around the world. This year, Sturgis Area Community Foundation donors and fundholders joined together to celebrate philanthropy in their own communities through a day of grant-making and giving. In total, $124,900 was awarded by community foundation funds in support of 26 local nonprofit organizations and charitable causes.


Here's a summary of the grants issued this year:


McClain Oster Fund

  • $2,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Michigan (Sturgis Club site)

James E. Riley Memorial Fund

  • $2,500 to St. Joseph County Office of Veterans' Affairs for the Emotional Support Animal Program


Adele M. Gray Fund

  • $400 to White Pigeon Community Schools Angel Tree Project which provides gifts and supplies to families in need during the holiday season.


Newell A. and Grace A. Franks Fund

  • $2,000 to Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Southwest Michigan for their work supporting St. Joseph County children in foster care.

  • $2,000 to Youth for Christ of Southwest Michigan

  • $3,000 to St. Joseph County Council for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect

  • $4,000 Elks Boots & Shoes Fund

  • $4,000 Austin Stemen Scholarship for the Trades

  • $4,000 Rooted of St. Joseph County

  • $4,000 Sturgis Area Community Foundation's Fund for Sturgis

  • $4,000 Augspurger Tennis Court Fund

  • $5,000 St. Joseph County Homelessness Prevention Fund

  • $5,000 Julia Renee Zimmerman Scholarship Fund

  • $5,000 Salvation Army of Sturgis

  • $5,000 Sturgis Youth Advisory Council

  • $5,000 Franks Park Endowment Fund

  • $5,000 Thurston Woods Village

  • $5,000 Keystone Place

  • $5,000 Arend/Sturgis Neighborhood Program Fund

  • $5,000 Sturgis Garden Club Horticultural Civic Beautification Fund

  • $7,000 Sturgis Community Pool Fund

  • $7,000 Mighty Matt Keyser Fund

  • $7,000 Sturges-Young Auditorium Capital Fund

  • $7,000 Sturges-Young Center for the Arts Programming Fund

  • $10,000 Trojan Timbers Playground Fund

  • $10,000 Patricia A. Franks Council of the Arts Endowment Fund
